Future Changes in 2009: Part 4: iPhone & Mobile Versions

Future Changes on iPhoneFuture Changes - iPhone home screen iconThis is the fourth in a series about the changes taking place on this blog in 2009. In Part 1, I wrote about the new name, in Part 2 I wrote about how I’m increasing industry coverage, and in Part 3 I wrote about advertising. Now let’s look at making the site work smoothly on the iPhone and other mobile devices.

When you visit the site on your iPhone, BlackBerry, or other mobile device, you’ll see a special version of the site that loads quickly, and focuses on the latest articles. When I read blogs on the go, I want to get right to the articles as quickly as possible, and the mobile version of Future Changes reflects that.

There’s no special address to reach the mobile version. Just go to http://www.ikiw.org as you would in a regular web browser, and you’ll see the mobile version on your mobile device.

Please let us know what plug-in you used to create this great iPhone version.

I was ambivalent about folding each post under it’s title – I expected a summary or the first few lines. But your well-written headlines and the fast response works well. Thanks.

  3. Doug,
The plugin is MobilePress – it’s excellent, customizable in just the right ways (i.e. you can choose which browsers should get the mobile version, adjust how your blog’s title and description appear in the mobile version, etc.). It also has support for developing your own theme, so you’re not locked into one set theme. That’s how I customized the header to include the Future Changes logo. I’ll likely refine the color scheme a little in the future, but for now, it’s done an excellent job at getting the blog to look great on the iPhone and other mobiles.
