Amazon launches Amapedia product review wiki

Amazon is launching a product review wiki called Amapedia, which lets its customers collaboratively write reviews of the products it sells. This is a great use of a wiki – reviews from people who’ve really used something and don’t have a financial motivation behind what they say carry significant weight in my opinion. What’s most promising about it is the way Amazon is running the project – the word community is used very clearly and very often, people who contribute to the site are called Amapedians, and the about page has a good set of Do’s & Dont’s. Taking clear steps to define a community and then establishing ground rules are critically important to the success of a wiki, and it appears than Amazon gets that. While I’m tempted to cite some of the rules here, I’d rather you go to Amapedia to look at them – that’s my way of reinforcing the community Amazon is working to build.
