Semantic information in the del.icio.us URL page
I recently looked at the URL page for this blog on del.icio.us. The URL page is a somewhat overlooked feature which gives stats on any URL that’s been bookmarked, including who bookmarked and when, any comments they included, keywords it was tagged with, and the total number of times it has been bookmarked. Neil Crosby has a good summary of all elements of the del.icio.us URL page on his blog workingwith.me.uk.
Using this semantic information, I can see how popular the site is, whether its popularity is on the rise, what people are saying about it, and what other sites they group it with based on the tags they assign (folksonomy). This kind of information – generated by users’ behavior, built into a tool as an incentive for content publishers and users alike, and easily accessible to me so my site can get better as more people use it – is a valuable example of the Web2.0 idea in practice.
