Mac OS X Leopard Server to include Wiki Server
According to Apple’s Leopard Server Sneak Peek released today, a Wiki Server will be included in the next release. From Apple: “Leopard Server includes a Wiki Server to make it easy for teams to create and distribute information through their own shared Intranet website. For the first time, all members of a workgroup can easily create or edit content right from their browser. With a few clicks, or by dragging and dropping, they can upload files and images, track changes, assign keywords, hyper-link pages, view and contribute to shared calendars and blogs, and search for content on the group Intranet. It’s a powerful communication assistant.” Notable features of the wiki server include “full drag-and-drop support” so “no syntax or markup knowledge is needed”, a shared calendar, mailing list and blog integrated with the wiki.
“Once you create a Wiki website and give access to members of the workgroup, everyone will have the same capability to contribute to the site.” makes it sound like Apple will include an enterprise grade permission system similar to what’s available in Atlassian Confluence, but it’s yet to be seen whether that will work at the page level, or just the site level.

Drag-and-drop and direct pasting of images, etc would be an exceptional improvement to any wiki. I find most wikis – Confluence included – to be quite stunted when it comes to page creation. Interestingly, Adobe’s Buzzword editor is only marginally better.
Easily adding an image in from another web page or dragging it in from your desktop is available in some web apps, but few solve the problem as well as a word processor or a layout application (e.g. InDesign).
Now, there’s plenty of improvements to be made in social software, but I’ll wager that the most usable systems see the adoption rates … in ecosystems where the users choose their own tools.
